Licencees

Tony and Emma Tait.

Tony came down from the North East to take up the position of head chef some four years ago for a previous owner. Tony liked the place so much that he decided to stay and lay roots in Batley. It was whilst working in The Barfield Arms where he met and married Emma, a local girl, who was also working in The Barfield Arms at the time.

Tony and Emma took over as licencees in January 2000 and have not looked back since. With the country feel to the bar, the quality home cooked food, the extensive range of beers and spirits and a warm and friendly atmosphere all go to make this free house the ideal place to visit whether you are looking for good beer, good food or both.

The History

"The Barfield Arms"

The name "Barfield Arms" originated from the book 'Value for Money' written by Derek Boothroyd. Derek had been the editor of the local paper 'The Batley News'.

A film of the same name was produced from the book starring Diana Dors and John Gregson. The film was mainly shot on various locations in and around Batley, which was known in the film as 'Barfield'.

Previous to this 'The Barfield Arms' used to be called 'The Albion' and was the local pub for the large Irish community that surrounded the area. The pub is directly opposite St. Mary's Church.

The Albion/ Barfield Arms has always been a sporting pub, supporting football, rugby league and horse racing, all of which are reflected in the ambient features around the pub.

Four years ago, the outside of the pub was redrawn creating a new landscaped car park, enough for thirty cars and a most attractive beer garden, both of which were constructed out of stone recovered from the demolition work on the site.
